How to Prepare for Your First LARP Event
Your first LARP event can be exciting, confusing, muddy, hilarious, exhausting, and completely unforgettable. A little preparation helps you spend less time worrying about your gear and more time enjoying the game.
Use this checklist before you leave home.
Read the event rules
Start with the official event information. Confirm check-in and start times, location and parking instructions, costume requirements, weapon safety rules, food and camping arrangements, weather policies, prohibited items, and whether new weapons require inspection.
Do not assume every LARP follows the same standards. If something is unclear, contact the organizer before the event.
Choose a character you can play easily
For your first event, keep your concept simple. Choose a role with an obvious reason to talk to people, such as a guard, merchant, traveler, healer, scout, or new guild member.
Prepare three conversation starters:
- “I’m looking for work.”
- “Who controls this road?”
- “I need help finding someone.”
- “What happened here?”
- “Can your group use another pair of hands?”
You do not need to memorize a ten-page backstory.
Pack a comfortable costume
Test your outfit before event day. Walk around, sit down, climb stairs, and wear it for several hours if possible.
A comfortable base layer such as the Ansgar Shirt can support several character concepts. Add a Hunter Belt or Ranger’s Leather Belt Bag for useful storage and visual detail.
Browse the Burgschneider collection for additional fantasy clothing options.
Bring approved equipment
If your character uses a weapon, confirm that it meets the event’s requirements. Practice carrying it safely and make sure you can draw, sheathe, or store it without getting tangled in your costume.
A short sword or dagger can be easier for a first-time player to manage than a large weapon. The Gudmond LARP Short Sword and Fidas LARP Dagger are examples of compact character options.
Pack for the real world
Your out-of-character bag should include:
- Water and snacks
- Weather-appropriate layers
- Spare socks
- Comfortable shoes
- Sunscreen and insect repellent
- Personal medications
- Phone and portable charger
- Basic first-aid supplies
- Any required camping equipment
You can keep modern supplies out of sight while playing, but never sacrifice health or comfort for immersion.
Do a final gear check
Before leaving, check your costume, weapon, accessories, and transportation plan. Make sure everything is labeled if you are camping with a group.
A prop such as the LARP Mead Bottle can add atmosphere, but water is still the priority.
Finally, remember that you are allowed to be new. Ask questions, listen to safety calls, and give yourself permission to learn as you go.
