Gambeson Warrior Torso

The sleeveless Torso piece of Epic Armoury's Warrior Gambeson, shown here in Desert Beige, covers the wearer from the neck down over the hips, front and back. It can be worn on its own or as padding beneath mail or armor, closing at the front with five full grain leather straps and brass buckles for an adjustable fit. Long or short sleeves are available separately and attach using cotton cords at the shoulders and sleeves, each secured through long-lasting brass eyelets.

Sturdy enough to function as armor in its own right, this piece is built from 100% polyester padding sandwiched between layers of heavy 100% cotton fabric, all stitched together in vertical lines to keep the padding in place and echo a classic European high-medieval construction.

While the cut is European, gambeson-style quilted armor has been used worldwide since ancient times, making the Warrior Gambeson a flexible basic piece across settings and eras. The outer layer is 100% cotton twill, the padding is 100% polyester, and the lining is 100% cotton.

  • Available in Ox Brown, Desert Beige, Epic Black and Natural colors
  • Available in sizes S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL and 4XL

History

  • Quilted armor has existed since at least 400 BCE
  • Commonly worn as padding beneath chainmail or plate armor
  • Records show a high-medieval European gambeson could stop a sword blow from breaking the skin
  • When layered under chainmail, it could also absorb heavy arrow strikes and blows from maces and axes
  • This particular style was often favored by freemen, mercenaries, and other independent fighters
