Gambeson Legs
Epic Armoury's Gambeson Legs are quilted cotton greaves designed to add comfort and cushioning beneath your leg armour. Made from quilted cotton canvas with a soft polyester interior and a medium cotton outer layer, they work on their own or as padding underneath heavier steel or leather armour.
Stitching keeps the padding evenly distributed across the Gambeson Legs. Cotton string lacing through brass eyelets up the calf secures them to your legs. Quilted armour of this kind was common across many cultures and eras, and its neutral style means the Gambeson Legs will suit a wide range of characters.
History
- Used as padding under chainmail or plate armour
- Historically, a high-medieval European gambeson was recorded as being capable of stopping sword blows from penetrating the skin
- Could stop heavy arrows and mace and axe impacts with the addition of overlaying chainmail
