Norman Shield
The Norman Shield from Epic Armoury takes its leaf-like outline from the shields carried by Norman soldiers during the early 11th century Norman conquest of England. Also known as a kite shield, it measures 45.3 in long, rounded at the top and tapering toward the bottom - a shape suited equally to mounted cavalry and soldiers on foot. Carved from EVA foam and coated in durable latex, it's built to resemble slats of true wood trimmed with a strip of real leather, with a shield boss mounted on the front in the style common around the time of the First Crusade.
The face is hand-painted with a tribal design, faded and aged for a battle-worn look. Six adjustable leather straps on the back let you strap it to either arm - a practical alternative to a punch-grip that compensates for the kite shield's distinctive shape. Keep it in good condition with regular latex maintenance.

History
- This design falls into the kite shield family: a round-topped silhouette that spread across Europe during the 1000s and later reached the Middle East on the heels of the First Crusade. Mounted cavalry found the shape especially useful, since it shielded the rider's left leg along with the shoulder and torso, and the style is closely tied to the Normans, who were first to put it into wide use. Builders combined laminated wood, stretched animal hide, and iron for the frame, capping the front with a round, convex Shield Boss to help turn away blows.
