Dane Axe
Built for swift Viking-style raids, Epic Armoury's Dane Axe is a formidable 59.1 in two-handed weapon well suited to smashing through shield walls and breaking up enemy formations. Its head carries a 8.7 in blade with a 7.9 in edge, made from soft foam reinforced by a harder foam core, mounted on a shaft textured and hand-painted to resemble real wood grain. A solid fiberglass core inside durable closed cell foam, finished under strong latex, keeps it safe and convincing for battlefield use.
History
- Primarily wielded during the 10th and 11th centuries, spreading from Scandinavia into England, Ireland, and Normandy
- Eventually gave way to the poleaxe by the 15th century
- The very first hafted axes date to roughly 6,000 B.C., their blades lashed to handles with birch tar and rawhide
- Battle axes commonly served double duty as tools, and cost less to produce than swords
