Skjoldehamn Cowl Bjorn

The Skjoldehamn Cowl takes its design from a hood found in a pagan grave dating to the first half of the 11th century, making it one of the earliest known examples of "Gugel" headgear. Its simple square shape features a wide brim that comes to a point on the chest.

Since its recovery in 1936, the original find has drawn extensive research and speculation over its cultural and gender origins. DNA analysis and further grave finds have yet to settle the question definitively, though current evidence points to a female member of the Sami tribe in Norway, based on the hood's ornamentation and shape. Further study, including more advanced DNA work and research into Sami fashion history, is still needed to fully understand this artifact's significance.
