History
Quilted armor dates back at least to 400 BCE, originally worn as padding beneath chainmail or plate. A well-made high-medieval European gambeson was documented as able to stop a sword blow from breaking the skin, and when paired with an overlaying chainmail layer, it could even absorb heavy arrow strikes and blows from a mace or axe. Freemen, mercenaries, and other independent fighters favored this particular style.
