Gambeson Warrior With Long Sleeves

Epic Armoury's Warrior Gambeson is a padded, long-sleeved coat covering the torso from the neck down over the hips, front and back -- shown here in Desert Beige, though it's also offered in other colorways. It functions equally well as standalone protection or as padding under mail or armor, going on like a jacket and closing at the front with five full grain leather straps and brass buckles for a fully adjustable fit. The arms detach easily, secured only by cotton cords at the shoulders and sleeves that thread through long-lasting brass eyelets.

Underneath that adjustable fit is a sturdy build: heavy, fluffed layers of 100% polyester sandwiched between layers of 100% heavy tan cotton twill, all stitched in vertical lines that hold the padding in place and reflect a classic European high-medieval construction.

Quilted, gambeson-style armor may be European in origin, but it has seen use worldwide since ancient times, making the Warrior Gambeson a versatile basic regardless of setting or era. In total, the outer layer is 100% cotton twill, the padding is 100% polyester, and the lining is 100% cotton.

  • Available in Epic Black, Desert Beige, Ox Brown and Natural
  • Available in sizes S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL and 4XL

History

  • Quilted armor has existed since at least 400 BCE
  • Commonly worn as padding beneath chainmail or plate armor
  • Records show a high-medieval European gambeson could stop a sword blow from breaking the skin
  • When layered under chainmail, it could also absorb heavy arrow strikes and blows from maces and axes
  • This particular style was often favored by freemen, mercenaries, and other independent fighters
