Gambeson Warrior with Short Sleeves

This short-sleeved version of Epic Armoury's Warrior Gambeson covers the torso from the neck down over the hips, front and back, and works both as standalone protection and as padding beneath mail or armor. It goes on like a jacket and closes at the front with five full grain leather straps and brass buckles, so the fit can be tightened or loosened as needed. Long sleeves are sold separately and attach just as easily, using cotton cords at the shoulders and sleeves that run through long-lasting brass eyelets.

The build is sturdy enough to serve as its own armor: heavy, fluffed layers of 100% polyester sit between layers of 100% heavy cotton twill, stitched together in vertical lines that lock the padding in place and mirror a classic European high-medieval style.

Though the cut is European, gambeson and quilted-style armor have a long history of worldwide use dating back to ancient times, which makes the Warrior Gambeson a versatile basic no matter the setting. Overall, the outer layer is 100% cotton twill, the padding is 100% polyester, and the lining is 100% cotton.

  • Available in Epic Black, Desert Beige, Natural and Ox Brown colors
  • Available in sizes S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL and 4XL

History

  • Quilted armor has existed since at least 400 BCE
  • Commonly worn as padding beneath chainmail or plate armor
  • Records show a high-medieval European gambeson could stop a sword blow from breaking the skin
  • When layered under chainmail, it could also absorb heavy arrow strikes and blows from maces and axes
  • This particular style was often favored by freemen, mercenaries, and other independent fighters
