Black Auxiliary Shield
Epic Armoury's Black Auxiliary Shield is a semi-curved shield taken from the world of ancient Roman legionnaires. This oval shield stretches 35.4 in to protect against wayward spears and arrows -- rally your friends with their own and form a devastating shield wall.
Made of EVA foam, the Black Auxiliary Shield is hand-painted in a glossy black finish with a metallic rim sculpted to resemble real iron, complete with small nail heads. The detail continues on the back, with a faux-metal rim around the reinforced punch grip. This 5.5 in grip is wrapped in suede leather for a comfortable feel usable left- or right-handed. A little regular latex maintenance keeps it battle-ready.
History
This design echoes the early Roman scuta, a shape that later evolved into a rectangle. Both oval and rectangular scuta curved dramatically inward, offering strong protection at the cost of some arm mobility for weapon use. At the center, the round convex Shield Boss served to deflect incoming blows.
