Gambeson Arms
Epic Armoury's Gambeson Arms are quilted cotton vambraces that add comfort and protection under your armor, made from quilted cotton canvas lined with a soft polyester interior beneath a medium cotton outer layer. Wear them alone, as padding beneath heavy steel or leather armor, or as extra protection for archers against bowstring slap. They deliver that comfort without the added warmth of a full gambeson shirt, making them ideal for costumes that skip the breastplate and tassets.
Stitching keeps the padding evenly distributed, and cotton lacing through brass eyelets secures them up the forearm. Quilted armor was common across many cultures and eras, and the neutral styling here suits a wide range of characters.
History
- Used as padding under chainmail or plate armor
- Historically, a high-medieval European gambeson was recorded as being capable of stopping sword blows from penetrating the skin
- Could stop heavy arrows and mace and axe impacts with the addition of overlaying chainmail
