History
Spears are among the oldest weapons in human history, used for hunting for at least 400,000 years and remaining the dominant weapon of the Stone Age until firearms displaced them. The yari itself was a traditional Japanese weapon prized for being relatively easy to both use and manufacture; the martial art built around wielding one is known as sojutsu.
